Under the poetic invitation of Alexandru Macedonski — “Come: the nightingale sings, and the lilac is in bloom!” — the commune of Ponoarele is preparing to host one of Romania’s most iconic spring celebrations. The Lilac Festival, 2026 edition, will take place on the weekend of May 9–10, transforming the botanical reserve at the foot of the mountains into a vast open-air stage for dance and celebration.
The event, a true landmark of Mehedinți tourism, celebrates not only the blooming of the largest wild lilac forest in the country but also the spirit of a community that honors its traditions. Visitors are invited to discover a spectacular landscape where the unmistakable scent of purple blossoms mingles with the echo of folk songs in the heart of nature.
Bonfires and Folk Performances in the Lilac Forest
This year’s program is designed to offer a complete experience, blending archaic customs with professional stage performances:
-
Saturday, May 9 (7:00 PM): The festivities begin under the magic of the evening. A spectacular bonfire will be lit at the edge of the forest, followed by an authentic village “hora” (circle dance). Local musicians will set the mood, offering tourists a chance to experience the vibration of an old-fashioned country party.
-
Sunday, May 10 (10:00 AM): The main day is dedicated to exceptional folklore. Beloved performers from the Mehedinți region will take the stage specially set up in the middle of the forest. The show promises to showcase the most beautiful traditional costumes and dances of the region within a natural setting unique in Europe.
A Weekend Destination Between Legends and Natural Wonders
A visit to Ponoarele for the Lilac Festival is the perfect opportunity to explore other fascinating tourist attractions in the immediate vicinity. “God’s Bridge” (Podul lui Dumnezeu), the largest natural bridge in Romania open to road traffic, is just a few steps away, offering an impressive view of the karst area.
Tourists can also hike to the Lapiez Fields, rare geological formations that look like they belong on another planet, or visit the Ponoarele Cave. The Lilac Forest Reserve, the central focus of the weekend, spans approximately 20 hectares and is where nature provides an unparalleled chromatic and olfactory show every May.
